Time To Find A New Hobby

Updated on August 19, 2011

Are you bored with your life?

Time to find an exciting hobby!
Time to find an exciting hobby!

Hobby- "an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation, a spare-time recreational pursuit."

Does it seem like you are spending too much of your precious time being a spectator instead of a participant? Do you lack diversion and excitement in your life? Do you need to find some new way to spend your leisure time?

If you answered yes to any, or all of the above questions, maybe it is time for you to find a new hobby!

How can you find the hobby that is just right for you?

The "list of hobbies" available for you to consider is definitely long and growing all the time.

Hobbies can be as diversified as becoming a collector, playing games, participating in outdoor recreation of some sort, cooking, gardening, singing, the list goes on and on. The biggest challenge you might face is finding out which hobby is just right for you. The best hobby is one that will fit your personality and your lifestyle.

There are actually sites with questions devised in a standard test form that can help you to figure out just that.

Answering a few questions can help you determine just what hobby you might be interested in:

  • How much time do you have? Some hobbies might be too demanding on your time limitations and might not be practical for your situation. Don't ever allow your hobby to become a burden...you are supposed to "enjoy" your time spent in a hobby.

  • How much money do you want to invest in your hobby? Some hobbies are costly and might be prohibitive depending on the budget you have for that area of diversion. There are many great hobbies that are inexpensive and enjoyable. You may choose to rent equipment you may need for your new hobby to see if you like it before you buy all the items required to participate in it.

  • Do you like to spend time indoors or outdoors? There are many advantages to each of these areas of choice. If you choose an activity that can be done indoors you are never deterred by the weather conditions and you can enjoy yourself in your own home. If you choose an outdoor activity you might look for possibilities that are open to you as close as your own backyard.

  • Do you want a hobby that you can enjoy with others or do you prefer to enjoy them alone? If you have social interaction at work and just desire some alone time, then you should choose a hobby that you can do by yourself. If however, you desire the company of others then a more social hobby would be desirable.

  • Do you enjoy working with your hands, or creating things? The answer to this simple question could open up a whole avenue of possibilities for you. From needlepoint to wood carving, there are a multitude of hobbies you can do if you get satisfaction from these areas.

  • Finally, what is your passion? Everybody has something that just sparks their interest, or lights a fire of interest to your soul. If you are uncertain as to what this might be, try something new. You might just find you have searching for that new interest all along.

Need some more ideas?

Here are four more exciting new hobbies you might like to try:

Tired of driving your same old vehicle? Why not transform your car into an "Art Car" and become a part of the Art Car World. This hobby is one that takes just a little creativity, and a lot of imagination.

Harrod Blank, the founder and developer of the Art Car has fast turned this hobby into a nation wide craze. These Art Cars can be seen in parades, festivals and now in their own Art Car Museum.

Why let perfectly good food go to waste?

Road Kill Recipes for you to try

If cooking as a hobby only seems to whet your appetite, why not try cooking in a specialized area, perhaps like becoming a Road Kill Cook.

Becoming a Roadkill chef is quite a distinguished honor. The greatest competition is held in Marlington, West Virginia in September, so you have plenty of time to home in on your cooking skills.

Some participants who are enthusiasts are the Fat Boys Wilderness Club, they explained, "We've been doing this nine years. The Fat Boys are brothers, cousins, old military comrades, and it's a chance for us to get together and spend a fun weekend."

This is a hobby that is definitely a matter of taste, but as they say, "If it comes from the hood, it has to be good."

Punkin Chunkin World Championships

Enter the "Punkin Chunkin" contest.

If you enjoy food, but not cooking...why not get involved with Punkin Chunkin?

Punkin Chunkin is actually a hobby that involves hurling a pumpkin by mechanical means over great distances in an attempt to hurl it the farthest. The methods used to hurl the pumpkins include slingshots, catapults, trebuchets, and pneumatic air cannons. Not only can the hobby include engineering skills, but you could use your gardening skills to grow the perfect pumpkin to chuck!

The cost of this hobby however might be taken into consideration, as the mechanical devises used to hurl the pumpkin are quite extensive. Perhaps, one might attend a competition first to ensure the interest is true.

I am not so sure Charlie Brown would approve of this hobby!

Lawn Mower Racing

To fill your need for speed.

If you desire a little more action, why not try Lawn Mower Racing?

For an outdoor adventurous hobby, why not try the "Grass Roots" motor sport of lawn mover racing.

These racing machines are originally commercial lawn mowers that were designed to simply mow lawns. The USLMRA (United States Lawn Mower Racing Association) has allowed for certain modifications to be done to the mower however, they must remain suitable for cutting grass. To race all the cutting blades must be removed from the mowers.

So get on the "cutting edge" of the sport and get out there and "kick some grass!"
